Ahhhh hypocrisy

(breaking story, courtesy of the blog of my friend Matt)

I have to laugh (in amazement, certainly not because it's funny) when such blatantly hypocritical statements like the following one come from the mouths of people like the Secretary of State of the United States (who holds a Ph.D. in international affairs):

"Russia is a state that is unfortunately using the one tool that it has always used …when it wishes to deliver a message, and that's its military power. That's not the way to deal in the 21st century."

Seriously?...You can't be serious...Is she serious! Wow. Because the way we deal with things in the 21st century is through book clubs, tea, and respectful conversation...and bombs.

On a related note, last night, my pastor asked me who my top five favorite presidents of the U.S. are. I responded: "George Washington. Post-Washington, everything was downhill in foreign affairs." And as great as he was, he wasn't anywhere near perfect on the issue.

Alas, that seems to be the template; some of the greatest political theorists/ thinkers are corrupted by power. Jefferson was a classic example. He was a champion of personal liberty and government restraint; yet, he ruled (in many instances, at least) in a manner opposed to those very principles he espoused over his distinguished career.

And, by the way, I read an article in the English version of Pravda the other day in which the reporter laughed at C. Rice's supposed Russian language skills. They don't think of her as a 'Russian Expert' over there, either.
