Making American History...in clip art

I found this really cool picture online today. As an American historian, and an American, I think this is really cool. Otherwise, I offer no further related political comments on this blog.
Who can spot Franklin Pierce?! How about Chester Arthur? Or everyone's favorite, Millard Fillmore?!

I too found this to be a really cool image. (I saw it on Piper's son's blog) Though it did remind me that I really have a bad memory of our presidents later then 1900.

I'm having a difficult time understanding the euphoria around Obama's 'historical' election as President. I thought skin colour doesn't matter...

Or does it?

Saying that skin color doesn't matter is way too broad of a statement. I think that very few people, even if they can't express it well, think that it doesn't matter for anything. It shouldn't matter at all when we're talking about a person's worth, actions, etc.. However, it is helpful as a category for measuring where we've been, where we've come, or how particular things have changed.

So, Obama's skin color shouldn't affect what we think of him as in the image of God, or how well we submit to his God-given authority. However, his skin color does matter in the context of talking about the differences between 1964, and 2008.

I agree with you inasmuch as all men are created in the image of God and are due to be treated with dignity and justice. But the question is raised: Does race play a factor in how a person acts; in this case, how he will govern?

There were throngs and throngs of jubilant (one might even say euphoric) blacks on television the other night who think that it does (and I tend to agree with them).

That is the frustrating aspect of this situation--the hypocrisy. If the 43 preceding presidents could not properly represent black Americans because they were white, what is the logical conclusion to be drawn?

In other words, we can't have it both ways. If a President Obama will be different because he is black, and the others governed differently and could not represent blacks because they were white, then why is everyone trying to pretend that racial differences are irrelevant--because they certainly aren't consistent about it.
