Two Random Bits of News

Two random bits of news from my life this morning:

1. A possum walked through my front yard today and almost up to my front door. My first thought was, That's a funny looking cat. My second thought was, Oh, that's because it's a possum. The end.

2. I came across this disturbing advertisement from Saddleback Church. Seriously? So, if people don't want the free gift of salvation from the God of the universe, we offer them a photo-op with Pastor Rick, a magazine subscription, and a Cliffs-Notes version of a membership class?

Well, pastor, I wasn't really interested in this "salvation of my body and soul from the wrath of God" thing before, but since you offer me a one-year magazine subscription for free, I can't turn it down now.

News item #1 brought much more rejoicing in my house this morning than #2, and that's sad.

I read this post really fast and thought you said that Rick Warren was in your backyard selling magazines and that your pet possum wasn't saved.

I still like my version.

Adam's version is awarded the "so much cooler than reality that it becomes reality" award. We'll be praying that the little critter sees the saving light soon.

On a side note, I was hoping that the baptism thing was an April fool's joke.

Wow it really does look like a funny looking rat. I've never seen a live opossum before, just dead ones on the side of the road.

And Saddleback's idea of baptism and church membership has always been a joke. They baptize people every weekend and ask each person, "why do you want to be baptized" and you can pretty much answer anything (save for "it's kinda hot today") and still get dunked. No previous information about baptism, no real interview, just check off the request for baptism box on your salvation card and you're in.

Jacob, I seriously thought it was a joke. I mean, the cheesy clip-art picture of Warren, the annoying changes in colors and fonts. But now, it's serious, sadly, serious.

Disturbing indeed.

Back in high school there use to be these stray cats that lived under the portable buildings and one day this girl picked one up during lunch. Nope, that weren't no cat, that there was a possum and it tore her up good. (That's how we talk in Silsbee, TX:)
